History
Superman III
Ross Webster is the C.E.O. of Webscoe Industries and one of the wealthiest industrialists in the world. An eccentric man, he is often prone to quirky comments. When, in one of his many organizations, an incident involving stolen funds by a computer hacker named Gus Gorman is brought to Webster's attention, Gorman is brought to his office, where Webster quizzes the hacker about his $85,789.90 paycheck and realizes that what he has on his hands is not a criminal, but a genius who can be of great value. Rather than report him to the police, he gives Gorman the option of working personally for him.
After securing Gorman's assistance, Webster began to monopolize the entire coffee industry by destroying Colombia's crops, as Colombia has been too strong in the coffee market for Ross to rival them. He sends Gorman to one of Webscoe's subsidiary companies in Smallville to create a computer program using an available weather satellite. From this, a massive storm converges over Colombia. However, Superman intervenes, flying into its midst to mollify most of the damage the storm caused, thwarting Webster's plans in the process.
Webster's next idea - in order to proceed and to use Gorman's talents - is to get rid of Superman, and the only way to get rid of Superman is to re-create, by computer, Kryptonite. Gus directs the satellite to send a spectroscopic laser to the remnants of Krypton in order to analyse its debris and see what Kryptonite is made of. However, when the spectroscope returns one of the elements as "unknown", Gus, checking out his pack of cigarettes, substitutes "tar" for the unknown component. Posing as an Army general, Gus, along with Vera, delivers the synthetic Kryptonite to Superman at a celebration, and are disappointed to see it has no immediate effect. However the false Kryptonite soon causes Superman to become surly, obnoxious and lecherous, thus effectively getting him out of Ross Webster's way.. In the meantime, Webster executes a new plan to deactivate all of the oil pumps in North America and reroute the oil tankers to the middle of the Atlantic ocean. To do this, he requires Gorman's help, yet again. But Gorman refuses unless Webster builds the hacker a state-of-the-art supercomputer he'd been secretly designing. Webster again uses his threat of turning Gus in for the embezzlement, but Gus retorts should he go to jail he can no longer do anything for Ross. Surprised that Gus outwitted him, Ross agrees to build the supercomputer. However, through an earlier fight, the evil Superman was defeated by the good Clark Kent, causing "good Superman" to return and once again attempt tpo thwart Ross' plan for financial domination.
At their Grand Canyon hideout, Webster, his sister Vera, and Lorelei Ambrosia, along with Gorman, set out to further his plans for economic control and to lure Superman into a trap. Superman does arrive, and enters a fierce bout with the newly constructed Ultimate Computer's Kryptonite ray and Vera Webster's transformation into a vicious cyborg. Just when Ross Webster seemed about to succeed, Gorman turned on him, helping Superman destroy the computer instead.
Effectively bringing an end to Webster's scheme, Superman never apprehended Webster, leaving his whereabouts, and ultimate fate unknown.
Production
The character of Webster was specifically created for the film and has never, before nor since appeared in any DC Comics publications. The reason for this was actor Gene Hackman's refusal to return as Lex Luthor from the previous two films in protest of director Richard Donner's firing. As a result of this, Webster's character is rather similar, being a financial genius, presiding over a multi-million dollar company who get by on his intellect rather than martial might.
